Scholarships
Scholarships are a helpful way to defray the costs of tuition, books, food, housing and other expenses directly tied to attending the university. Over $55 million in scholarships and grants is distributed annually.
Merit-based awards are awarded to students based on their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, field of study and more. Need-based awards are funded by the generosity of W&M alumni and friends who set the criteria for recipient selection and how the money will be applied. Students interested in pursuing need-based scholarships must apply for financial aid to demonstrate financial need.
In addition to awards provided by the financial aid office, there are additional scholarship opportunities from numerous department scholarships, and students can also pursue outside scholarships and other external resources. Please note that financial assistance from outside sources may affect your eligibility for financial aid since those resources reduce your financial need.
