Requirements and Guidelines for Mascot Ideas
When reviewing and evaluating mascot ideas, the Mascot Committee used these requirements and guidelines.
The proposed mascot:
- must be one that can be translated into a costume that a person can walk around in
- can be human, animal, vegetable, mineral or ?
- must be able to be attractively presented in official William & Mary colors - green, gold and silver
The proposed mascot cannot violate National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) guidelines and rules.
The proposed mascot should:
- engender pride and affection for William & Mary
- be appropriate at both athletic and non-athletic events
- be unique and have a connection to the special history and traditions of W&M
- be able to stand the test of time
- be compatible with the official marks of the university, supporting future marketing and communication
The proposed mascot should not be the same as the mascot of another school in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). These mascots are already in use by other teams in the CAA and will not be considered:
- University of Delaware - the blue hen
- Drexel University - the dragon
- George Mason University - the patriot
- Georgia State University - the panther
- Hofstra University - the lion and the lioness
- James Madison University - the duke dog
- University of North Carolina at Wilmington - the seahawk
- Northeastern University - the husky
- Old Dominion University - the lion
- Towson University - the tiger
- Virginia Commonwealth University - the ram
