Dear Colleagues,

It’s wonderful to be back on campus and kick off the final leg of the semester!

For brevity’s sake during this busy time of year, here are this week’s Top 5 Things to Know:

  1. The Board of Visitors voted unanimously to form a new school bringing together Computer Science, Data Science, Applied Science and Physics on Friday, Nov. 17. In case you didn’t catch the news before break, W&M News has an excellent article about the announcement and next steps for W&M’s first new school in over 50 years. The new school represents the culmination of several years of dedicated work by many and strategically positions W&M into the future.

  2. Applications are now open for the Applied Research & Innovation Initiative (ARII). This program offers support for multidisciplinary research projects “that address societally important issues that also align with goals of Vision 2026 and intersect with the missions of any of the current host units,” which are the Global Research Institute (GRI), Institute for Integrative Conservation (IIC) and Whole of Government Center for Excellence (WGC). The deadline to apply is Jan. 14, 2024. 

  3. W&M IT will provide a webinar on managing your files within the Microsoft 365 environment tomorrow, Nov. 28 from 11 a.m. to noon. This event may be helpful to anyone who would appreciate a guided tour through OneDrive, uploading and downloading files, sharing folders and using Microsoft Teams. There’s no need to register; simply join the Zoom meeting at the appointed time.

  4. As we approach the end of the semester and therefore finals season, please note that students need to schedule final exam appointments with Student Accessibility Services by 9 a.m. on Dec. 4 if they require a different testing environment. If you are able, please remind them of this so they can work on making arrangements soon. 

  5. The shout-out for this week goes to the VIMS Center for Coastal Resources Management for their efforts in helping the university reach the goal of a carbon neutral campus by 2030. This VIMS Center recently obtained a 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE EV, replacing two older gasoline vehicles, for use in advisory service, education and research.
