February 26, 2024

Dear colleagues,

Last week, I had the chance to make my way around campus a bit more than usual, visiting the very atmospheric (albeit in need of support) Ceramics Studio and Kaplan Arena, where I enjoyed another victory by our fabulous women’s basketball team. As I did so, I was reminded of the many opportunities that exist at W&M for our students to find connections and experiences that can serve as inspirations for all of us.

Here are the Top Five Things to Know this week:

  1. Professor of Theatre and Africana Studies Omiyemi (Artisia) Green ‘00 will give this year’s Tack Lecture, “A History of African American Theatre & Black Theater at William & Mary,'' in Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall’s Glenn Close Theater on Wednesday, Mar. 6, at 7 p.m. Professor Green will talk about her archival research and interviews with key figures as she works to develop a comprehensive historical narrative about the history of African American presence in theater. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.

  2. As you might have noted from previous Digest items, William & Mary is accepting applications to be a Community-Engaged Faculty Accelerator. “The Presidential Council of Community Partnerships’ Community-Engaged Faculty Accelerator provides training, cohort-based learning, and a minimum of $1,000 stipend to each of five faculty to strengthen their community-engaged teaching, learning, or scholarship.” Please submit your application on Thursday, Feb. 28. by 11:59 p.m.

  3. W&M Strategic Cultural Partnerships opened a call for proposals for the 2024-25 Faculty Fellowships cohort. There will be a luncheon to learn more about the program, meet with current and past Fellows and answer questions in Sadler Center, James Room on Tuesday, Mar. 19, from 12-1 p.m. Please RSVP if you’d like to attend. If you’re unable to make it, you can also get more information through the program’s webpage.

  4. The Professional & Professional Faculty Assembly (PPFA) is still accepting nominations to be part of the 21-member committee. This group brings together peoples’ opinions on topics that are relevant to professionals and professional faculty (PPFs), voices those opinions with university administration and works with Human Resources to find trainings that are relevant and helpful. If you’d like to nominate yourself or someone else, please keep in mind that the priority deadline to do so is this Friday, March 1.
  5. The shout-out for this week goes to the faculty who have received public recognition for their work, whether that be through media placements, awards/grants, or new research publications. The Arts & Sciences home page now has a new feature sharing all of the related announcements, plus the W&M Law School has a page to see all of the media clips their faculty earn and the Mason School of Business shares faculty in the news. You all never cease to amaze me with your accomplishments, and I am excited that we have so many places to share the great news.
