PIPS Releases Diplomacy Lab Report on Mediterranean Migration
William and Mary’s PIPS program recently released a report titled “Irregular Migration in the Mediterranean: Recommendations for U.S. Action” for the Bureau of European & Eurasian Affairs as part of the Department of State’s Diplomacy Lab program. To stem the mounting humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean, the report recommends that the United States: (1) organize a public relations campaign to deter migrants similar to the U.S.-led Danger Awareness program in Central America, (2) contribute stockpiled aerostats from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to the search and rescue operations, and (3) coordinate the work of recipient countries and NGOs to reform detention centers.
