Recycling
The EH&S Office is responsible for managing several University recycling streams. They include the following:
- Batteries
- Light bulbs
- Oil
Batteries
Alkaline batteries are collected at numerous locations on campus. Some areas that contain alkaline recycling buckets include Swem Library, Small Hall, and Facilities Management. Lead Acid batteries are collected in a central storage location. Contact the EH&S office if you have questions regarding the locations for recycling your used batteries.
Light bulbs
For more information on fluorescent lamp recycling, visit the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality's web site on "How to Recycle Fluorescent Lamps".
Oil
Oil is utilized for many different applications on campus from lawnmowers to research apparatus. We recycle used oil through a company that reclaims and reuses the material. If you have used oil that that you would like to recycle, contact the EH&S office. EH&S offers a training class on Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures that provides information on safe oil handling practices. If you handle oil in your work area, we ask that you complete this training annually. It is available through the University's Learning System and is announced each year through the W&M Digest.
