Message regarding the Aug. 23 earthquake
Anna Martin, vice president for administration and chair of
the Emergency Management Team, sent the following message to the campus
community on Aug. 23, 2011 - Ed.
About
an hour ago an 5.9 earthquake hit Virginia. The quake was felt as far
north as Massachusetts. The first reports are indicating that the
epicenter is between Charlottesville and Richmond. I would caution
that at this point there few details and initial reports may be over ridden by
additional information.
The campus and the local area felt mild tremors. There are no reports of injuries, utility interruptions or damage on the campus.
The U.S. Geological Service is predicting that aftershocks will be felt over the course of the next 24 hours. Additional information can be obtained from your regular news sources.
