Homecoming Parade
Anna Martin, vice president for administration, and Karen Cottrell, executive vice president of the W&M Alumni Association, sent the following message to the campus community on Thursday, Oct. 13. - Ed.
Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,
The 2011 Homecoming will be like none before it. William and Mary is covering the streets of Williamsburg with green and gold!
For the first time in the College’s history, on Friday, October 21, our Homecoming Parade will be held on campus beginning at 4:30 pm. The Parade will kick off at William & Mary Hall, wind down Ukrop Way to Landrum Drive, pass through the Crim Dell, continue down James Blair Drive and exit onto Richmond Rd passing by the Alumni House. President Tim Sullivan and Ann Sullivan, members of the Class of 1966, are this year’s Grand Marshalls.
So that everyone can join in the celebration the College will close at 4:00 pm. There are many great places along the route from which you can watch and cheer. There will also be a reviewing stand at the Alumni House.
After the parade, beginning at 6:30 pm, a Richmond Road Block Party will become the center of Homecoming with live music from an alumni band along with carnival games, food and drinks from local vendors. Pay-as-you-go and bring everyone — we'll have plenty of room. Come join your fellow alumni, faculty, students, family and friends as we take it to the streets for the very first time.
ROAD CLOSURES AND PARKING RESTRICTIONS
There are a few important logistics that will allow all this to happen. Ukrop Way will be closed to all traffic at College Terrace from 2:00 pm to 6:30 pm. Traffic will be able to exit onto Jamestown Rd from Ukrop Way throughout the event, but entry will be restricted beginning at 4:00. All cars parked on streets along the parade route will need to be moved by 2:00 pm that day. Cars may be moved to near-by parking lots. We hope you will stay to enjoy the parade, but if you need to remove your car from a parking lot along the route, you must be out of the lot by 4:00 pm or you will not be able to retrieve your car until 6:30 pm. The Morton lot and the parking deck will not be affected by the parade route. Please be sure to take a look at the attached detailed list of closures and affected streets for a more complete description of the event logistics.
We hope you will join in the festivities as we celebrate the special community we all share and cheer our College. Go Tribe!!
