About the Program

The Film & Media Studies Program will help you to cultivate a perspective that is interdisciplinary and global. You will explore how film and media not only represent but shape cultures, societies, histories and identities, both personal and collective. The core courses will challenge you to think critically and creatively about how film and media function as aesthetic and cultural practices, while our production classes will teach you the skills necessary to develop your own voice and make your own contribution.

What Makes Us Different

  • Self-Designed Study

Build your own major working closely with a faculty advisor.

  • Creative Engagement

Apply what you learn in the classroom to hands-on media projects, then bring that experience back to the classroom.

  • Community

Students and faculty from all kinds of disciplines, as well as alumni, work together formally and informally to foster a dynamic environment of learning and enterprise.

Outcomes

Many film & media studies alumni pursue careers in media production from Hollywood to New York to Washington, D.C. and all over the mid-Atlantic region. They return regularly to offer seminars and workshops, mentor students and even hire new graduates. Alumni also work in areas like journalism, marketing, communications and teaching.
