2020 Graduate Faculty Mentoring Award
Together with the Graduate Student Association, the Office of Graduate Studies and Research is pleased to recognize this year's winner of the Graduate Faculty Mentoring Award. This award is intended to recognize faculty who serve as exemplary mentors to graduate students in Arts & Sciences. Audrey Horning, Forrest D Murden Jr Professor of Anthropology, has been chosen for this honor based on several enthusiastic letters of nomination from graduate students and alumni.
The Graduate Faculty Mentoring Award is made possible through partnership and support from the A&S Graduate Studies Advisory Board, the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate and Professional Studies, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, and the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research. The Graduate Student Association was instrumental in initiating this award.
Award Citation for Professor Audrey Horning
With an approach her students characterize as demanding, compassionate, respectful, and generous, Professor Horning guides students from the the first stages of their work on through to post-degree career and professional opportunities. Her many strengths as teacher, manager, scholar, and adviser converge seamlessly on mentoring students toward achieving their fullest potential. As an active and widely-recognized archaeologist and scholar, for example, she models a passion for research and goes out of her way to ensure students engage with the most recent scholarship and the larger academic community.
Described by her advisees as embodying “compassionate tenacity” and demonstrating meaningful confidence in their abilities, students note her deep commitment to their individual success and attention to their goals. Students also cite her emphasis on the importance of ethical scholarship practices and community engagement, and her readiness to guide them at every step "toward intellectual and professional independence."
For the many ways in which she serves as a role model for graduate mentorship, it is fitting that Professor Horning be recognized with the 2020 Graduate Faculty Mentoring Award.
