Why W&M
When choosing which college to attend, I was beyond grateful to have several options that I was very excited about. To make my decision, I had to ask myself what I really want out of higher education. Here is what I came up with: I want to attend an institution that will best support and equip me to positively impact the lives of those around me as well as challenge me through intellectually stimulating coursework, study abroad programs, and unique research opportunities. I drew charts, journaled, and made my mom listen to elaborate monologues weighing pros and cons. I waited for “the feeling” that people describe when they step onto the campus they eventually choose to call home for the next four years.
As I continued to analyze my options, I became nervous that “the feeling” would never come. I mostly attribute this to my philosophy that there is not a single “right” school for any one person. There are many ways to make this world just a bit brighter, and they can be carried out in a diverse array of spaces. However, while the institution one attends does not necessarily determine what they can or will do, it certainly determines the environment in which they do it and the people they will do it with.
My interactions with current scholars, alumni, and the directors during the selection process and Finalist Weekend is what truly convinced me that William & Mary is the place for me. Simply stated, I had never seen so many people with so many different interests express so much love for a school and a program. Hearing scholars talk about their interesting research opportunities, incredible study abroad experiences, and challenging yet rewarding coursework proved to me that the 1693 Scholars Program and William & Mary as a whole is an environment that encourages exploration, excellence, and making a genuine impact. I could not be more grateful to take my place among this cohort of thinkers, learners, and dreamers.
