A hallmark of Professor Forsyth's teaching and mentorship of students is his ability to take all students, including those that others might overlook, and guide them toward achieving their potential. An accomplished scholar who has opened new directions in his field, he seamlessly integrates this research into his teaching in ways that serve as a role model to faculty and students alike. His approach has helped to inspire the next generation of scientists, and has resulted, to date, in 34 student co-author listings in his research publications.
He regularly wins high praise from students for both his lecture and seminar courses, who note the value and impact of weekly review sessions and one-on-one interaction outside the classroom. In his co-taught COLL 100 course, From Discovery to Knowledge, he introduces first-year students, many of whom are underrepresented in the sciences, to the excitement of research and the life-changing support of a mentor who cares deeply about their success. This high level of commitment extends also to students engaged in independent studies courses, Honors projects, and master's degree programs.
Previously his accomplishments have been recognized by two distinguished term professorships, the Plumeri Award for Faculty Excellence, and the Thomas Jefferson Award. It is fitting that he now be recognized with the Arts & Sciences 2020 Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence.
