Letter from the Chair
Dear Alumni and Friends,
Greetings. Now at the start of the Fall semester I want to take the opportunity to look back at what we in the Department of Art and Art History have been doing and to alert you to a few upcoming events. Most especially we hope to see you at our Homecoming celebration and to let you know that this will be a Brunch held in the Andrews Foyer/Garden on Saturday morning (October 26) from 10-12. We hope you take this opportunity to visit with faculty (old and new) and students.
Last year we had two speakers come to campus as part of our distinguished Lecture Last fall, the architect William Tate gave a talk: U: BUILDING PUCCINI architecture, memes, education + landers. In the Spring Therese O'Malley, Associate Dean of the Center for Advanced Studies in the Visual Arts (National Gallery) presented, “In the Park: Lewis Miller and Mid-19th Century American Landscape”. The Distinguished Lecturer series will host artist Jerome Witkin (Syracuse University) in the Fall and art historian Michael Fried (Johns Hopkins University) in the spring.
Thanks are in order for the support of two of our alumni. To Case Jerningan (class of ’08) for his role as Recruitment Coordinator for the New York Studio School. Case was able to start a annual departmental award for a studio concentrator to particapte in the well-known NYSS drawing marathon. The first reciptient was Katherine Wood (class of 14). Our gratitude as well to Jerry Dawson Begley (Class of 1985) of Dawson Begley Design for his offer of “sweat equity” and advice on the renovation of the Phillips Sculpture Garden (Andrews-PBK).

This Fall's Distinguished Lecturer Series Department of Art and Art HistoryJerome Witkin is recognized as one of the most formidable contemporary figurative painters. Critically, Jerome Witkin generates notable praise, as exampled by the L.A. Times citing his work to be “a break-through in post-Cold-War art.” The San Francisco Chronicle’s Kenneth Baker cites that “Witkin’s only peer is Lucian Freud…. Witkin is one of the finest realist painters working today…he stages pictorial dramas that grapple with contemporary historical crises and moral pressures, while offering a lavish physical display of his medium…. ” Witkin’s works can be found in the permanent collection of prominent museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. Jerome Witkin is represented by Jack Rutberg Fine Arts in Los Angeles. MONDAY OCTOBER 7TH AT 6PM ANDREWS 101 |
