Kim Van Deusen

Associate Director, 1693 Scholars

Who I am:

Kim Van Deusen, Associate Director, 1693 Scholars Program

What's with the photo:

Twice a week, I hurriedly change from my work clothes to my workout gear and head to the student Rec Center. I teach fitness classes and have been a certified instructor for over 10 years. Currently, I teach Step and Stretch & Roll.

Why W&M:

The students, faculty and staff who make up this community are truly exceptional people. I enjoy working with and getting to know these folks who are smart, sincere, engaging and witty.

Fun Facts:

I played DI soccer at JMU for a year as a goalkeeper. I couldn’t handle the injuries so I switched to club soccer, but I wouldn’t take back that amazing year for anything. It was the first time I got to play with truly talented athletes.

Some concerts I’ve been to: Phoenix (I was hooked as soon as I heard Lisztomania), Heart (my first concert), Depeche Mode (I went to high school in the 80s, what can I say?), They Might Be Giants (now my daughter listens to their albums for kids), Rush (My brother plays the drums. Neil rules.) and U2 (Hello, it was The Joshua Tree).

Why people make fun of me in the office: I’m not on Facebook (it’s evil) and I get teary-eyed at anything that is slightly sappy, touching or sad (especially if it involves a dog). If it involves a small child and a dog, forget about it.
