What is Sustainability?
At William & Mary we are committed to building a better world by championing sustainability to address society's most pressing environmental challenges and improve the well-being of all.
By putting learning and empowerment at the heart of everything we do, we recognize that our most meaningful contribution to sustainability will lie in our ability to educate the next generation of climate leaders who are prepared to think boldly and act humanely to address the most pressing issues of our time.
Sustainability Commitments
At William & Mary, we recognize that one of the greatest challenges of our generation is climate change. Our approach to climate action focuses on three thematic area, connected by the mission of learning and empowerment. Explore our plans and progress:
The Green Fee
The Green Fee was established by student request in 2008. It funds sustainability projects, initiatives, and research every semester. The Green Fee has financed over $1 million in projects and seeded the Green to Gold Fund, a green revolving fund.
Land Acknowledgement
Like peer institutions around the country, William & Mary seeks formally to acknowledge the original Indigenous inhabitants of the state-owned land on which the Williamsburg campus resides, and has partnered with their present-day descendants to create appropriate language.
